Backyard Adventure Girl. How did I come have that e-mail identity? Well its a mixture of things. I’m a traveler and adventurer by nature. My youth was spent moving every two years and I was introduced to many different types of communities. I learned through that experience that we have our own vast cultural differences right here in the USA to discover. Also parents brought me up hiking and backpacking in the true northwest tradition. We never went to Disney land. Instead we went to the Cascades, the Olympics, and the Rockies. That early exposure to change created a yearning in me to keep on exploring and discovering the world around me.
I can find adventure anywhere. I’ve spent many days exploring my backyard. I’ve bush wacked, swam, hiked, and kayaked the Green River Gorge near my house. I’ve biked down a little logging road in a small forgotten plot of wild land near Covington. These adventures eventually led me to promote conservation and exploration of these areas. An adventure in itself that led me to meet with politicians, organize communities, learn to do public speaking and a whole host of things I never thought I’d be doing.
I can find adventure in a whitewater river, along a green mossy trail in the woods, or in the challenge of learning something new. Having a sense of adventure is a state of mind. It is not only about traveling great distances to far off lands and cultures. Its about how we see the world and how we interact with it.
Today I explore my backyard for conservation. I travel with my camera documenting the incredible landscape in southeast King County and then taking those images out to the larger community to promote conservation of some of our “Last Best Wild Places in King County”. It is a passion to explore and a passion to conserve some of our unique areas that keeps me pursuing those adventures in my backyard as well as the larger world beyond.
