Sacapulas to Santa Ana Verapaz
Day 28. Stage 22. 102 km. 2880 meters (9448 ft) of climbing. The biggest day of climbing on the entire route. It was one of the best days of climbing because the paved roads were quiet and we had a long section of dirt. The road was bisected by a giant landslide. The government decided not to repave and repair the road. The locals decided to keep the road open. They do all the work to clear landslide debris and keep it open. You have to pay a toll to the locals to use the road. Our fixer, Cristiano, had it all smoothed over by the time we arrived. They waved us through. We got to enjoy a quieter road because it wasn't a main connector after the landslide.
